During the COVID-19 pandemic, many residents faced uncertainty and restrictions; for many, Kibera remained home. Having lived in Kibera for more than two decades and played football, Gordwin uses the game to reflect on how access to it has changed.
Limiting Talent.
When participation in academy leagues depends on fees, equipment and transport, young people with fewer resources can be excluded. This project asks how accessible neighbourhood play spaces can offer more ways to take part.
Keep the Game Open.
Football is more than a route to elite competition: it can be recreation, friendship and neighbourhood life. Design can support informal, low-cost play while respecting the people who already use these spaces.
Access is part of the Game.
This concept considers how school grounds, courtyards, streets and other shared spaces might connect into a more welcoming network for play. Any proposed sites, routes or changes should be shaped and verified with the community.
